Hey... Look!  It's an Alp!

Whereas in London and Paris we relied on mass transit, in Germany we wanted to go out into the country.  We'd become a little educated because of a TV show called "Passport to Europe", and decided to rent a car and go south of Munich for a couple of day trips.  These became the highlights of our visit.

Only an hour south by Autobahn (where I clocked a little over 100 mph (165 kph)), you start stumbling into some of the most amazing views any of us had ever scene.  Photos can't do it justice, but take a close-up look at any of these here.  Every one is a favorite.

One of the trips took us to Oberommergau, which was a sleepy little town tucked away in these mountains that was supposed to be renowned for their wood carvings.  It was a surprise to find that pretty much everything was closed up at just 2:30 in the afternoon on a Saturday.  Even so, it was a drive worth taking.

Everybody was helpful, even if they didn't speak English.  One guy actually lead us on the highway to the right exit to get back to Munich.

I'm surprised that people living around there can get any work done.  If I had a window in an office around there, I'd sit starry eyed and gaze out at these views all day long.  The only thing I've seen that comes close it the Grand Canyon.

When we were strolling around in Munich, we noticed some very active sports stores that had lots and lots of mountain climbing equipment.  Now we know why.

It turns out the we were only an hours drive or so from where then filmed "The Sound of Music".

I liked the one on the right so much, that I now use it as the wall-paper for my computer screen.  There's just something tranquil about it.  We learned from one of the locals that those little huts are used to hold farm equipment, and are encouraged to be there by the regional government.
